Preston Manor as a Specialist Science and Maths College

Preston Manor has an excellent reputation for Science and Maths education throughout Brent and London. Since achieving specialist Science and Maths status, results in these subjects have drastically increased across the key stages and are significantly above the National Average. Students benefit from increased choice at GCSE and A level including the option to study the separate Sciences or applied Science GCSE's with the option to take an additional Maths GCSE planned.  At A level, in addition to the 3 traditional science subjects and Maths, students can opt to take applied science and further Maths. We are one of the top 20 schools in the country for progression to A level Science and a large number of students progress to further education in Science or Maths.

We believe students achieve best when they are motivated and eager to learn about the subject. Achieving science college status has enabled the school to modernise science laboratories equipping them with cutting edge facilities and as a result of the school expansion Maths lessons will take place in newly built classrooms. We work closely with education providers including higher education institutes, research institutes and schools within and outside the UK developing innovative approaches in teaching and learning which raise achievement in specialist subjects. Students have the opportunity to participate in a wide range of extra curricular enrichment activities including visiting museums and educational sites around London, taking part in National Competitions, workshops, summer schools and lectures from visiting scientists.

We have developed strong links with our community since becoming a Specialist School. We work closely with local primary and secondary schools, running student workshops and teacher training sessions to share our expertise in engaging students and raising achievement in Science and Maths.

We are continuing to develop links with Science and Maths businesses in the local community. We would be particularly interested in hearing from parents who work in these areas and would be willing to contribute to our development as a Science college. If you would like further information on this, please contact Helen O'Connor (Assistant Head and Director of Science) by email: helenconnor@pmanor.brent.sch.uk

RAPP

  • As a High Performing Specialist School, we were invited to apply for a second Specialism and become a Raising Achievement, Transforming Learning (Mentor) School.
  • RATL Mentor Schools support a number of schools/one school locally or regionally through staff contributions at conferences, hosting school visits and offering bespoke support. We will support underperforming schools.
  • The Specialist Schools Academy Trust has provided us with a list of schools who have been made aware of our many areas of strengths and welcome our support.  Also as an HPSS school we shall be working with 17 other high performing specialist schools.

Leading Edge

As a Leading Edge School, we work in an innovative and collaborative way with partner schools to transform secondary education.  Together we coordinate projects that focus on developing learning, self evaluation and leadership at all levels for both students and staff.  By working together and sharing good practice, we achieve collaboratively what would not be possible alone.
